Why This Registry Exists

The Toyota Soarer and Lexus SC are among the most iconic Japanese grand tourers ever built. From the original Z10 in 1981 through the final SC430 in 2010 — nearly three decades of Toyota's vision for the perfect GT car.

The Soarer Registry is a community project to document every surviving example in the world, building a permanent searchable record for owners, historians, and enthusiasts.

Generation History

Nearly three decades of Toyota's grand touring vision.

Z10
1981 – 1985
First Generation Soarer

Toyota's bold entry into the personal luxury GT segment. The Z10 debuted at the 1981 Tokyo Motor Show and instantly redefined Japanese grand touring with its wedge-shaped silhouette and smooth inline-six powertrains. It remained Japan-domestic only, making it among the rarest and most collectible of the lineage.

  • 1G-EU — 2.0L I6 105 hp
  • 1G-GEU — 2.0L DOHC 160 hp
  • 5M-GEU — 2.8L I6 170 hp
  • 6M-GEU — 3.0L I6 180 hp
First Japanese car with electronic fuel injection across the entire range.
Z20
1986 – 1991
Second Generation Soarer

The Z20 pushed boundaries in every direction. Twin-turbocharging arrived for the first time in a Japanese GT, and the car debuted a fully digital instrument cluster — a genuine first for any production vehicle in Japan. The ultra-rare Aerocabin targa-top variant further cemented its icon status.

  • 1G-GEU — 2.0L DOHC 160 hp
  • 1G-GTEU — 2.0L Twin Turbo 185 hp
  • 7M-GEU — 3.0L DOHC 200 hp
  • 7M-GTEU — 3.0L Twin Turbo 230 hp
First Japanese production car with a fully digital instrument cluster.
Z30
1991 – 2000
Third Generation — Lexus SC

The Z30 marked Toyota's global ambitions. Sold internationally as the Lexus SC300 and SC400, it brought the Soarer to North America, Europe, and Australia for the first time. The SC400's 1UZ-FE V8 was praised as one of the smoothest engines ever built.

  • 2JZ-GE — 3.0L NA 225 hp (SC300)
  • 1UZ-FE — 4.0L V8 250 hp (SC400)
  • 1JZ-GTE — 2.5L Twin Turbo 280 hp
Voted Motor Trend Import Car of the Year in 1992.
Z40
2001 – 2010
Fourth Generation — SC430

The final chapter. The Z40 moved firmly into luxury GT territory, shedding the sport credentials of its predecessors in favour of supreme refinement. The retractable hardtop was a technical marvel for its era. Powered exclusively by the silky 3UZ-FE V8, the SC430 remained in production for a decade — a testament to its timeless design.

  • 3UZ-FE — 4.3L V8 300 hp
  • Retractable hardtop (RHT)
  • Available LHD & RHD
  • Final year: 2010
The SC430 was produced for 10 years without a major redesign — the longest run in the lineage.
